Matilda Joslyn Gage was one of the leaders of the women's suffrage movement during the 19th century. She shocked even her radical peers when she called on all women to unite in opposition to the church, which she believed to be the single biggest threat to their freedom. Gage believed that the mainstream suffragist movement did not address the root cause of women's inequality so she formed her own organization.
