Aug. 12--Hilary Alemanni, a veterinary technician at the Oakland Animal Shelter, said she grew up around animals. But she never set out to create a bird sanctuary. She and fiance Bruce Bleecker purchased their first bird from a pet store five years ago, which led to the purchase of three more. Alemanni, 29, who used to work in a veterinary hospital, started adopting birds from people who could no longer take care of them. Now there are 200 orphaned and otherwise homeless parrots and related birds under Alemanni's care, living at the couple's home ...
