Throughout the '80s Mariani's neo-Neo-Classical painting was an integral part of the argument for a return to figuration, and his images of idealized, sculpturesque anthropoids have found a permanent niche in recent art history. Not content to rest on his laurels, however, Mariani has in the past few years attempted to broaden the scope of his art and enliven it.
