Civil society: a paradigm or a new slogan?

Civil society is an ideal situation in which citizens work together in harmony but it is not a currently accessible goal and so should not be adopted by social activists or the ecumenical movement. Current political societies such as the US, Europe and Latin America use the concept to suit their goals, resulting in significantly different definitions. While global unity is a valuable goal, true civil society cannot be achieved without recognizing and accepting differences. However, the civil society ideal can serve as a model for developing better societies.
