JOHANNESBURG: The Burundian government has been accused of concocting a coup plot against itself as a pretext for arresting and torturing opposition leaders.

A prominent Burundian journalist has claimed South African intelligence agents helped the ruling CNDD-FDD party concoct the coup plot.

Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad said on Tuesday that the government had received no reports of SA involvement but was investigating the alleged plot.
