The Burundian government has been accused of concocting a coup plot against it as an excuse to arrest and torture opposition leaders.

A prominent Burundian journalist has claimed that South African intelligence agents helped the ruling CNDD-FDD party concoct the coup plot.

Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad said the government had received no reports about SA involvement but was investigating the alleged coup plot.
