NEW YORK -- People often experience medication as if it were a person, transferring to a drug feelings aroused by the prescriber or important people in the patient's life. This process, if unappreciated, can compromise psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, where analysis of such feelings is essential.

But even when treatment is purely pharmacologic, such personification may cause or exacerbate side effects, amplify distress, and undermine compliance, Dr. Adele Tutter said at a meeting sponsored by the American Psychoanalytic Association.
