Jul. 30--He is the fresh-faced future of a team full of graybeards.

He is 21-year-old fireballer Matt Cain, and he offers the San Francisco Giants hope. The franchise has spent the past 13 years slashing and burning their farm system to build around Barry Bonds. That strategy has led to a decade-plus of contention, but very little in the way of homegrown talent. Cain might end up being good enough to make up for years of front office sins.
