RELAXED AND smiling "Apo" arrived after sunset for a press conference with a group of European journalists, in a village in Lebanon's Bekaa valley, so close to the Syrian border that the Kurdish leader barely had to leave his Syrian sanctuary to meet with the press. Apo is the nickname of Abdullah Ocalan, the secretary-general of the PKK (Workers Party of Kurdistan).

Under pressure from Turkey, the Syrians have closed down the facilities he once enjoyed in the Bekaa and the famed "military academy" where his fighters would pose and parade for Western photographers. ...
