High competition and further specialisation, with growth limited to a few niche areas, are current features of the hose market.
Profitability lies in high tech applications, according to Alain Sabatier of French rubber producer Hutchinson SA's hose operation in Tours. Hence Hutchinson now concentrates on such areas: the more technical the hose the more difficult it is to make, giving less competition and more profit, Sabatier added.
