An education officer recounts his experiences in the four years spent after 1949 with his wife in the ancient kingdom of Benin in Western Nigeria. Their travels within Benin took them to Gwato, which was once the old port of Benin. Portuguese explorers, sailing along the Gulf of Guinea, had discovered the coastline of present day Nigeria and named it 'the kingdom of Benin.' Gwato, also spelled Aggaton, was one of the most important ports on the Guinea coast.
