In 1924, Dr Alberto Denti took up a position as medical officer on the Gulf of Sirte in Italian Libya. His charges were a small group of Italian troops led by the Duke of Aosta. Nearly two decades later, as the Duke of Pirajno, he was the last Italian governor of Tripoli and, as such, responsible for handing over control of the city to British forces when they arrived in 1943.
