Jul. 25--Class is a bit different than it was in 1943. But Doris and Millie still sit next to each other, as do Elsie and Jeri. The children of Czech immigrants who settled on Chicago's West Side in the 1920s and '30s, many were their parents' translators for the outside world. At Farragut High School, they stuck together, but once married with jobs, they scattered farther west to blend in with suburban life.
