Ultimate tensile strength of a new medium carbon martensitic steel alloy ranges from 280 to 325 ksi (1932 to 2242 MPa); yield strength is 220 to 260 ksi (1520 to 1794 MPa); elongation is 11 to 16%; and Charpy V-notch impact toughness ranges from 23 to 36 ft-lb (31 to 48 J). Mechanical properties are thus similar to those of Co-Ni-Mo superalloys, AerMet 100, and Marage 250. Copper content is less than 0.6%, and the silicon/copper ratio is in the range of 1.5 to 2.5, with nickel in th...

Effects of Alloying Elements on Microstructure, Hardness, and Fracture Toughness of Centrifugally Cast High-Speed Steel Rolls
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; A study was made of the effects of alloying elements on the microstructure, hardness, and fracture toughness of centrifugally cast high-speed steel (HSS) rolls. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of hard carbides located along solidification cell boundaries and the type of the tempered
Effect of the Presence of Alloying Elements in Interstitial-Free and Low-Carbon Steels on Their Surface Composition after Annealing in Reducing Atmospheres (Dew Point = -30 °C)
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) method is used to study the outer surfaces of interstitial-free (IF) and low-carbon (LC) steels with different alloying element contents (P, Ti, Nb, and Mn) after annealing at temperatures of 850 C and 705 C, respectively, for 40 seconds in reducing
Influence of alloying elements on the kinetics of massive transformation in gamma titanium aluminides
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; The effect of alloying elements, Nb and Mn on massive transformation in Ti-45A1 based alloys was studied. The alloy samples were heat treated at 1350 [degrees]C for 30 minutes and subsequently cooled to room temperature by furnace cooling, air cooling, and water quenching. The microstructural
Toughness of nanoscale and multiscale polyamide-6,6 composites.(Abstract)
Polymer Engineering and Science ; INTRODUCTION Thermoplastic polymers as a class of materials are lightweight and ductile, with strength-to-weight ratios competitive with metal alloys. From a structural standpoint, what is deficient is their low stiffness and, despite their high ductility, their poor toughness (1). From a fracture
