An important offspring of the U.N. Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, was the introduction into the vernacular of the term sustainable development. It became the banner for future economic planning.
Admittedly some ecologists see in these two words inherent contradiction. Nevertheless, it moves us several giant steps away from the dogma that free enterprise, unfettered by any external planning, is the sole means to the promised land. We welcome the move. ...
