There are currently over three hundred U.S. and Canadian modern dance companies. While it is difficult to measure total numbers, there are roughly 3,300 dancers in professional companies, schools, and universities, among those reported. Of this number. schools account for about four hundred fifty dancers nationwide; university dance departments total about three hundred. Compare this with two hundred seventy-five U.S. and Canadian ballet companies with a total of well over 5,000 dancers.)
