In a recent note in these pages, Marijane Osborn sought to confirm the solution to Riddle 17 of The Exeter Book as a beehive or, more precisely, a skep made of straw. The present contribution broadens the frame of reference beyond the Anglo-Saxon world by considering bee-keeping elsewhere in the British Isles, both in the Celtic realms and in the Danelaw. In particular, it addresses the two runic letters that accompany the poem in the manuscript and questions Osborn's proposal that the second of these, the L-rune, is a prompt for the word leap, "basket" and thus complements ...
