INDIVIDUALS with high intake of seafood from the Yatsushiro Sea, which was heavily polluted by methylmercury in factory wastewater discharge into the sea from 1932 to 1968, developed Minamata disease (MD), or methylmercury poisoning. The first official case of MD occurred in 1956, but the concentration of methylmercury in the sea has not met the standard safety criteria for many years.
