For most wine drinkers, South America has always been a source of good value and nothing more. For years, most South American winemakers agreed, and were content to provide pleasurable wines for friendly prices; few had aspirations beyond that.

Not long ago, things began to change with the first high-ticket entries of brands such as Almaviva, from Chile. At the brand's first release in 1999, the wine cost $65 at retail in the U.S. market, evidence enough that a boundary had indeed been breached.
