CAIRO, Egypt _ In a closely watched case, an Egyptian court Thursday spared the marriage and perhaps the life of a University of Cairo professor under attack by Islamic fundamentalists as a heretic.
The judge dismissed an unprecedented lawsuit against Nasr Hamed Abu Zeid, which argued that his scholarship on Islamic thought made him an apostate and thus ineligible under Islamic law to remain married to his Muslim wife.
