Corrosion has the chemical process industries seeing red in their metal tanks and pipelines--and on the bottom line, too. In the U.S., for example, chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical producers incur direct costs of $1.7 billion/yr for corrosion, or 8% of capital expenditures, and that does not include costs for operations and maintenance. All totaled, reports the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE; nace.org; Houston), corrosion costs the U.S. economy $276 billion/yr, or 3% of gross domestic product.
