The Middle English term 'corlew' could refer to either Numenius arquata, the Eurasian curlew, or to Coturnix coturnix, the European quail, and it seems likely that the ambiguity was intended by Langland in 'Piers Plowman' Passus xiv, line 43, 'the Corlew by kynde of the Eyr, moost clennest flessh of briddes.'
