Jun. 9--Shouldn't some operas just be banned? The thought crossed my mind Tuesday while sitting through San Francisco Opera's plodding production of Tchaikovsky's tedious "The Maid of Orleans," about Joan of Arc.
They can't kill Joan fast enough in this dated and often ridiculous work, in which Tchaikovsky paid tribute to French grand opera and came up with a bottomless bowl of borscht. It's so heavy and so dull and so long -- 2 1/2 hours of crescendos, thunderclaps, hand-wringing and nonsensical plot twists at the War Memorial ...
