The lack of consensus among agricultural chemical makers on the meaning of sustainable agriculture is due to the many variables involved. In developed countries there is a trend toward soil management practices that maximize the use of minimal acreage, to reduce pesticide levels in water runoff. Some US and European experts agree this sort of intensive farming is more compatible with sustainable agriculture than organic farming. At any rate, in 30 years a revolution in plant breeding could reduce agricultural chemical use by 20-30%
