Au Bon Pain franchisee Gerry VanAcker opened his restaurant in Campus Martius Park in Detroit with the hope that it would play a role in the rebirth of a troubled city and would serve as a springboard for additional locations.
In the 18 months since, Au Bon Pain, located in front of Compuware Corp.'s headquarters, has been at the center of some of the city's biggest events, including Motown Winter Blast, an outdoor festival that took place during Super Bowl XL, and last year's Detroit International Jazz Festival.
