Holt, Rinehart has received criticism of its textbooks from both liberals and conservatives. The publisher has acknowledged that content has been geared to certain stereotypes, but it chose to ignore conservative complaints for the most part and incorporate a multicultural bias.

It has become one of journalism's autumn perennials: Book-burners are conspiring to relegate our children to ignorance. Read a bit further in the articles and, almost invariably, the would-be censors turn out to be conservatives.
