Pavel Tchelitchew's paintings feature contorted figures, strange perspectives and surrealistic imagery. Tchelitchew achieved some popularity with New York's art critics in the 1940s, but offended patrons with his inconsistent style and eccentricity.

Pavel Tchelitchew's ethereal, ecorche gouache portraits are prime examples of the "shock of the old." These "inner landscapes" from the late 1940s look completely contemporary and seem odd precursors of Kiki Smith's body works and the psychedelic portraits of Alex Grey.
