Q: The siding on our house and the fascia boards have become stained from mildew. What is the best way to remove these stains before repainting?

A: First, be sure it's mildew. Dark spots on wood siding often are caused by mildew, and a house doesn't have to be shaded or near water to develop the problem. However, the spots can appear on hard board siding when moisture is forced through siding, causing wax to bleed through. In cedar and redwood siding, resin bleed-through also can cause dark spots.
