HERE comes sunshine," said Anju excitedly, pointing to the first curve of a lemon-coloured sun emerging from some wispy morning cloud over the Bay of Bengal. It had followed the inevitable first question asked of most visitors to India: "What is your country?"

Being British went down well with Anju. Like many fishermen along the Coramandel Coast of Tamil Nadu he had lost his boat to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. His new one, like many others in his village, had been provided by aid donations from the UK.
