Electronics companies are working to bring VCRs into the digital age. Digital techology promises better picture quality, the ability to record several programs at once, and unlimited copying of tapes without image or sound degradation.

Digital videotapes will likely be smaller than today's VHS cassettes, which means home decks could shrink. The diminutive tapes would provide several hours of recording time. Digital video recorders already exist in the professionalmarket, but they cost tens of thousands of dollars.
