Ship Canal workforce to be cut from 120 to just 70; Automation means fewer staff needed, says Peel.(Business)

PEEL Ports has unveiled plans to cut around 50 jobs from its Manchester Ship Canal operation.

The announcement follows a review of the Manchester Ship Canal's dock operations. The review has concluded that the introduction of new automation means fewer staff are needed.

Peel, which also owns Mersey Docks, has sent letters to all of Manchester Ship Canal's 120 staff informing them about the redundancy plan.

A consultation process with trade unions will now commence.
