THE death toll from the Indonesian earthquake neared 5,000 last night, as rescue workers warned that time was running out for those trapped in the rubble.

The quake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, flattened houses in the ancient city of Yogyakarta on the southern coast of Java on Saturday.

A government official said more than 4,500 were confirmed dead, while up to 20,000 had been injured and more than 100,000 were left homeless.

The quake is thought to have heightened activity at nearby Mount Merapi, a volcano which experts believe may be about to erupt.
