Many companies are using the clean layering development approach when moving mission-critical transaction processing (TP) applications from mainframes to client/server environments. Clean layering is a set of principles intended to ensure software independence; developers must adhere to industry standard application programming interfaces (API) and protocols when implementing new applications or modifying legacy applications.
