The Taiwanese political system has undergone major revisions since the late 1980s, before which the Kuomintang (KMT) dominated the political arena with two minor parties holding minimal power. Both minor parties had been in existence since the founding of Taiwan and forming more parties was illegal under martial law. However, in 1987, martial law was ended and so many new minor parties were formed including the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The DPP made significant gains in the 1989 and 1992 elections, though there is evidence that the KMT and DPP worked together to exclude other minor ...
