May 23--TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. will release a diesel engine-powered passenger car in Japan within three years for the first time, the company's president said Tuesday.

The vehicle will be equipped with a high-performance, environment-friendly diesel engine which "should arouse no resistance whatsoever even in the Japanese market," Takeo Fukui said during an interview with Kyodo News.

There are almost no diesel engine vehicles in Japan, where they are widely considered unfriendly to the environment.
