Aldus Corp., a software pioneer on hard times, is searching for a new president and CEO.

Paul Brainerd, who holds the position now, has been named to the new post of chairman of the board of directors, though he will remain the chief executive until a successor is found by the headhunter firm, Heidrick & Struggles.

Aldus has also axed the position of Chief Operating Officer. Sandy Smith, who has held that post for the last eight months, has elected to resign immediately. Her functions of sales, marketing, finance and product development will be taken over by the CEO.
