TONY BLAIR will today say that troops must stay in Iraq for as long as they are needed to protect the new democratic government.
He will raise the prospect of British soldiers starting to come home from Iraq next year but will refuse to give a timetable.
Mr Blair is expected to fly to Washington this week to mount a strong defence of his decision to support the toppling of Saddam Hussein.
