What is bursitis, and how is it treated?

Bursitis occurs when a fluid-filled bursa sac between a tendon and skin, muscle or bone becomes inflamed and irritated. The condition most commonly affects the bursa sacs in the shoulder, elbow and hip. Bursa sacs help reduce friction and allow your joints to move easily. These sacs can become irritated when you overuse a particular joint through repetitive motions associated with raking, shoveling, scrubbing, sports and other activities, or through repeated bumping or prolonged pressure to a joint.
