May 22--The trombone's jubilant refrain broke the stillness of the awakening village of Bethlehem where throngs of people gathered in the shadow of the austere yet imposing facade of Central Moravian Church.

The year was 1806 and as many as 6,000 congregants and people from the outlying countryside came to celebrate the May 18 dedication of the new Moravian sanctuary.
