May 19--SOLVANG, Calif. -- As the bells tucked into the adobe arches toll their final deep gongs, parishioners file in and out of Mission Santa Ines between Sunday Masses.

The bells and the tower that holds them are reconstructions. You'll find many in California's Spanish missions, especially those that continue to serve as parishes.

But that doesn't diminish the splendor and value of Santa Ines, with its deep maize, coral and mint green hues that give the mission a joyous feel. The tiles and most ceiling beams are original, as are many ...
