MONTHS of speculation that President Olusegun Obasanjo might get the constitution changed to let himself run again for a third term of office ended abruptly this week when a proposed amendment was rejected by the Senate. Mr Obasanjo accepted the verdict in a speech to the National Assembly on May 18th. His jubilant opponents hailed the vote as a victory for Nigeria's fragile democracy.
