Needleless connector devices were introduced to reduce the risk of percutaneous, or "needlestick," injuries among healthcare workers who access intravascular devices or injection ports. Needlestick injuries expose workers to bloodbome pathogens and increase the risk for transmission of serious diseases, including HIV and hepatitis B and C. In 2001, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) revised its Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to encourage the use of needleless devices as part of an overall plan to reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
