When foreign companies invest in the United States - whether purchasing an American firm or entering the market through other means - it often comes with great fanfare.

For instance, when foreign car companies open plants on U.S. soil, they are treated as local heroes. They create thousands of jobs and can provide an economic boost to an entire region. On the flip side, as we've learned with the recent controversy over foreign management of American port facilities, sometimes the response isn't quite so welcoming.
