Health care facilities cope with new environmental risks.

The disposal of medical wastes has received closer attention from regulators and the public since the discovery of medical wastes on public beaches in 1987 and 1989. The Environmental Protection Agency is expected to introduce legislation governing the disposal of medical wastes, including new standards for health care facility incinerator emissions. It is important that environmental risks be evaluated by medical facilities and proactive risk management measures be undertaken.
