The availability of a comprehensive optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) technology will have major consequences for the design of wide bandwidth and microwave fiber-optic systems. By combining numerous optical and electronic functions on a single chip, high functionality circuits can be manufactured with low cost and high reliability. This paper reviews the present status of such technology and its potential for future wide bandwidth systems.
