Maxwell Anderson, director of New York's Whitney Museum of American Art from 1998 to 2003, has been named director of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, effective mid-June. He replaces Anthony G. Hirschel, who resigned in 2004 to lead the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago.

During Anderson's tenure at the Whitney, membership doubled, attendance rose by 40 percent and acquisitions worth some $220 million were made. His time ...
