In Shakespeare's King John, Prince Arthur is betrayed by his allies, defeated in battle, and imprisoned by his uncle, King John, who orders his follower Hubert to blind the little boy with hot irons and then murder him. Arthur briefly catches a break when pity moves Hubert to spare him, and the king discovers that he needs a live Arthur to keep his nobles in line. But then, in a shockingly sudden reversal of fortune, Shakespeare kills off Arthur, as he attempts to escape from prison:
