Miles Davis did not wait for anyone. Even titling a new composition was a nuisance. When asked the name of the 40-minute sonic assault he leveled at the legendary Isle of Wight Rock Festival in 1970, Miles snapped, "Call it anything." And so it was.
Call Davis brash, boastful and abrasive. But also call him tender, poetic and vulnerable. He played his horn with a boxer's grace, looking for musical openings with which to feint and parry.
