May 02--Ferdinand Scheeler had a resume like few other architects: the Sears Tower, the John Hancock Center, a major Middle Eastern airport and a world-famous university chapel. Those structures, among dozens of others, came together under Mr. Scheeler's careful hand and watchful eye during 37 years at the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

But as each new landmark sprouted, Mr. Scheeler remained quiet, exacting and unassuming--the very traits colleagues say allowed a middle-class, blue-collar boy from Chicago's Near West ...
