Apr. 29--Nearly two hundred years ago, Ludwig Van Beethoven decided that music needed not just to entertain or occasionally provoke, but to challenge and explore. His music was jarring, composed to enrich and ennoble, to quicken his listeners' inner worlds.
It's hard to hear that today, so used are we to Beethoven's now familiar innovations. We moderns understand his language and can easily silently hum along, as if to a catchy movie score.
